Pictures and Quicktime Movies of Amoeba proteus streaming and engulfing a paramecium!!
An Amoeba proteus was filmed streaming and engulfing a paramecium! Unfortunately after about 12 minutes after enclosure of the Paramecium, the front between the water medium and the dry air from the slide drying out reached the amoeba! This caused the amoeba to expell the paramecium before the usual 15 minutes it takes to dessicate the engulfed paramecium! The amoeba, as an apparent result of this contact with the water air interface, not only expelled the paramecium but apparently part of itself as well as the expelled part of the paramecium seemed enclosed. Still there appeared to be part of the paramecium inside of the amoeba as some of the cillia of the paramecium remained in the amoeba waving! The third to last photo shows this condition! Also a vessicle was expelled a distance from the engulfment and filled with particles and later the wall of this vessicle disrupted! Perhaps this was exocytosis of pinnocytically ingested material due to a change in the pressure? In any case the amoeba remeined alive till any further observation was disrupted by the dessication
